SAFE Associate – Anne-Marie McAteer

Anne-Marie has recently retired after 30 years working in the police, mostly as a detective and safeguarding specialist.  She is now working as a safeguarding consultant and trainer.

Anne-Marie has predominantly worked in the field of investigation within Child Abuse, Domestic Abuse, Sexual Abuse & Vulnerable Adults. She has extensive criminal crown court experience and holds a Master’s degree in advance child protection and is currently finishing a diploma in interviewing of children and vulnerable witnesses at The University of Sunderland.

Anne-Marie holds a QA level three award in Education and Training and, for the last three years of her policing career, has worked within the learning and development department of Kent Police. Within the L&D department, Anne-Marie created and delivered multiple training courses on Child Protection to both Police and Social workers. Anne-Marie’s training also covered areas around Domestic Abuse, Adult Abuse, Achieving Best Evidence (ABE) interviewing, Sexual Offences, Honour-based Abuse, Forced Marriage, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE). Anne-Marie was also responsible for creating and delivering an advanced witness interviewing course to officers.

Anne-Marie is a Tier 3 suspect and Tier 3 Achieving Best Evidence interviewer as well as a Tier 5 witness and suspect interview advisor.  Anne-Marie is also accredited in the Forensic Questioning of Children programme.

Anne-Marie has recently collaborated with University of Kent and Kent Police on a joint project for a new training stimulation for officers around Child Sexual Exploitation. She has also assisted in Child Protection talks to students at the University as well as local schools.

Anne-Marie holds a real passion for child protection and the interviewing of vulnerable witnesses. She strives to engage with other professionals to encourage good working together, and good practices to assist professionals in gaining the voice of the child. She enjoys sharing her experiences as an investigator and thrives on providing first class engaging and informative training to all she delivers too.
