SAFE Associate – Sophie Baker
Sophie is a qualified social worker and has spent over 20 years working within child protection and safeguarding. She began her career working within residential settings supporting adults with learning disabilities and qualified in 2001. Sophie initially worked with children in need, children in need of protection and children who were looked after by the local authority and was awarded a Kent Police Commendation in 2006 for her work with victims of child sexual abuse. Sophie moved into team management in 2007, offering reflective and mindful supervision to front line social workers and students.
After some time managing a network of children’s centres and focussing on improving outcomes for children under 5, Sophie returned to statutory social work within a quality assurance and practice development management role. For ten years she provided support and critical challenge to Senior Leaders to further develop systems and processes to ensure the rights and voice of the child continued to inform integrated practice.
She successfully completed a Masters Degree in Advanced Child Protection in 2019, which further developed her knowledge of contemporary research theory, and policy in this area.
Sophie is skilled in the formulation, implementation and review of local policy and procedures and is experienced in designing and delivering training presentations and workshops to professionals. She has authored Individual Management Reviews and represented the Local Authority as a panel member at a range of Reviews including Domestic Homicide Reviews and Child Safeguarding Reviews etc.
In 2023, Sophie started a bespoke training and consultancy business. Throughout her career, she has prided herself in her use of strength and relationship-based approaches both within her skills in consultancy and to the training and development of others. She believes in the need for continued professional and personal growth and is skilled in developing others using empathy, reflection and critical challenge techniques.
